Tarot Card Numbers: A Free Beginner's Reference Guide

If you're curious about your tarot deck, this is a great place to start! In this post, we'll go over the major arcana cards and what the numbers mean in tarot cards. The major arcana are the 22 trump cards in a tarot deck - but there's the entire Minor Arcana to think of, too!

So if you've got questions, we've probably got some answers. Let's take a look and try to demystify the tarot card meanings together. Let's get started!

How many tarot cards are in a deck?

The tarot deck has 78 cards in total, which includes the 22 cards of the Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana cards. The Major Arcana cards are numbered from 0 to 21, with The Fool being numbered as 0 and The World being numbered as 21. The Minor Arcana cards are divided into four suits, which are Cups, Wands, Coins, and Swords. Each Minor Arcana suite has 16 cards inside, with similar number meanings.

What is tarot numerology?

Tarot numerology is the belief that the tarot card meanings are influenced by the numbers on them, and the numbers can be used to interpret the card. This is often used in conjunction with the card's position in a reading. For example, if you pull The Fool tarot card in the first position of a reading, it might mean that you're about to embark on a new journey. If you pull The Fool elsewhere, then it may mean something completely different.

Tarot numerology also asks you to pay attention to patterns like repeating numbers, the appearance of your lucky number, or even the repetition of single digits. Maybe you're only drawing odd numbers on the Minor Arcana, or maybe you never even see a Minor Arcana card in your readings. If you keep drawing the same numbers over and over again, there may be a numerical meaning hidden behind your tarot reading.

How do I learn my tarot card numbers?

Luckily, tarot readings follow the same patterns as general numerology principles. So once you learn what your Minor and Major Arcana tarot cards mean, you can add the numbers in tarot as an extra layer of complexity.

The best way to start is by looking up the meanings of each tarot card. There are a lot of great resources out there, so we'll leave that part up to you! If you're struggling, we've got a great list of tarot books ready to go for you to review. After you've got a good understanding of the tarot cards, start practicing with some simple numerology exercises.

Single Digit Numerology

Sometimes, it's easiest to just share the information, so that's what we'll do now. The rules of numerology are simple. Add everything down to a single number. Let's take a date as an example. We'll use 6/17/1988.

6 is by itself already, so hold onto it.

17 breaks down to 1+ 7 = 8.

1 + 9 + 8 + 8 = 26.

Then, we need to simply again. 6+8+26 = 40

And one more time, 4 + 0 = 4.

So if you were born on 6/17/88, in numerology, your master number would be 4. You would keep an eye out for this master number in any tarot readings you were doing, as it could signify specific things to you. This is also known as your "life path number" and can indicate a number that has meaning to you throughout your life.
